Can I Make My Wedding Video HD (High-Definition)?

I get asked this question a lot: “My wedding was videotaped X numbers of years ago when high-definition (HD) video didn’t exist. Are you able to convert it to HD for me?” A variation of this question is, “I have my wedding on VHS tape. If you put it on a DVD for me, will it be in HD?” The short answer to both of these is “no”. Now, there is something known as upscaling and some companies may offer these services and charge for them, but in my experience the results are not worth paying for.

To address the question about putting VHS tapes on DVD, this is a service that we offer, but here is what I tell people. VHS degrades very quickly. If you have your wedding on VHS, you know what I mean. You should always keep such media, even DVDs, stored in a cool, dark place where moisture can’t get to it. That being said, transferring your VHS tape to DVD will not make the quality better. What it will do is prevent the quality from getting worse so you should do it as soon as possible. It’s not very expensive; We charge $60 per hour of VHS tape. More importantly, it will prevent your wedding video from fading away, which, if you keep it solely on VHS will happen eventually to the point where the video will become unwatchable.

If you have to choose between the option of SD or HD, which these days you shouldn’t have to (and videographers should not charge more for HD services either) , choose HD because the best quality any video can ever be is the original quality at which it is taped.

Catonsville weddings – Roger and Dianna

Roger and Dianna tied the knot at Our Lady of Victory church on Wilkens Avenue in Catonsville, MD. What a beautiful church! My assistant, Paul, did an excellent job of capturing the brilliant light coming through the windows and just getting all of the little details of the church as well.

The reception followed at Overhills Mansion, which, if you’ve been there you know is a great place for a wedding reception with great food. I think we caught some really amazing moments at this wedding and was really excited about sending it off to the happy couple to review. They came back saying they loved it and didn’t want to make any changes. Then they asked if we could make it available online so all of their friends and family around the world could see it. So of course we obliged. Enjoy!

Wedding at the University of Maryland College Park

Will and Jennifer were married in a beautiful ceremony at Greater Bethlehem Temple on Liberty Road in Randallstown, Maryland on October 22, 2011. The reception followed at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in downtown Baltimore, Maryland on Pratt Street.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a wedding shot in a museum, but man it was a beautiful location. The place itself is immaculate with a huge dance floor – great for a wedding videographer with lots of room to move around and with well over 200 guests, the bride and groom needed every inch of the place. The view of the Baltimore skyline was beautiful. You could walk right out on a patio area during the cocktail hour and see the traffic on President Street roll by. It didn’t hurt that it was a beautiful fall night about 65 degrees.

Right after the toasts, the bride and groom gave a little speech thanking everyone for coming to the wedding and then brought their parents up for a little surprise. What was it? Watch this video and find out!

How to tell the difference between a good and bad wedding video

Recently, I was looking around at some of my competitors in the Baltimore wedding video industry. Naturally I went to their websites and looked at some of the wedding video packages and prices, but what I was really interested in were the wedding video samples. What I saw was a great disparity. There are some very talented companies in the wedding videography business in Maryland and there are some that, to be honest, aren’t that good. The hardest part for the bride and groom to be that are looking for someone to film their wedding is how to tell the difference.

Here is my suggestion: Open up multiple browsers or multiple tabs within browsers. Go to the wedding galleries of the wedding video companies you are interested in and start playing the videos simultaneously. Then switch back and forth among the tabs or windows and see if you can tell the difference.

You should be able to tell things such as which companies use lower end cameras because the colors won’t be as rich and the detail won’t be as sharp. You’ll be able to compare shaky, hand-held camera work with steady work done on a tripod or steadicam. You’ll be able to tell which wedding video companies shoot creatively and which are run-of-the-mill.

And one final note. Be wary of companies that post MONTAGE videos as their online demos. These are compilations of all of their best shots. While these might seems appealing, keep in mind that it is easy to get or two nice shots at a wedding, then add this to your montage as if all of your work looks that way. The difficult part is getting consistently amazing shots throughout the day. Look at companies that have complete highlight reels from a couple’s wedding to get the best idea of how your final video will look.
